Prenatal Care
Mothers who fail to receive early prenatal care and regular prenatal care are at higher risk of delivering low birthweight infants and having their infants die before their first birthday.  Nearly 80 percent of women at risk for having a low birthweight baby can be identified during the first prenatal visit.  Early and continuous prenatal care is one of the most effective strategies for ensuring the birth of a healthy baby. Inadequate prenatal care can lead to increased costs from extended hospital stays and medical treatment for critically ill babies to lifetime medical care and special services for children with developmental problems caused by low birthweight.
